First snow near Lake Baikal, eastern Russia

The Terra satellite shows the aftermath of wide-spread fires in the forests surrounding Lake Baikal in southern Russia. Deep red burn scars cover the Buryatiya Republic, the Russian state to the east of the lake, in this false-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image taken on September 13, 2003. MODIS images from May 2003 show hundreds of fires in the region. The Global Fire Monitoring Center reported that about 3.12 million hectares burned in Buryatiya during the month of May.
