Red dots and thick plumes of smoke reveal the locations of several early autumn fires burning in California's Sierra Nevada mountains and along the northern coast. The fires were probably started by lightning. This image was taken on September 25, 2003 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)on the Aqua satellite.
