Snow on the Putorana Plateau, eastern Russia

Snow frosts the high points of Russia's Putorana Plateau, a rugged, wild region in northwestern Siberia. The moon-like landscape of the mountains reveals the plateau's ancient volcanic origins. As can be seen in this image, the region is dotted with lakes and lined with rivers. The Putorana Plateau contains some of the most powerful waterfalls in Russia. NASA's Aqua satellite captured this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) true-color image on September 25, 2003.
