Red fire markers show hundreds of fires burning across Northern Argentina and Paraguay in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image taken on August 20, 2003, by the Aqua satellite. A particularly intense blaze in Paraguay has cast a thick, triangular veil of smoke over the landscape to its south. The brown squares are areas that have been cleared.
