The Booth and Bear Butte Complex Fire in Central Oregon are clearly visible in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image acquired by the Aqua satellite on August 29, 2003. The two fires are burned through heavy, old growth forest as well as regenerating mixed conifer forest. Other fuel for the blazes included dead timber killed by insect infestations. Wilderness areas and campgrounds in the region were closed to the public and State Highway 20 was closed off and on due to encroaching flames and thick smoke.
