Scattered fires send plumes of smoke into the atmosphere over Northern Argentina in this true-color Terra MODIS image from August 26, 2003. The fires are in a rich region for agriculture; snowmelt from the Andes feeds many of the rivers in this region. Rectangular agricultural plots cover the land like a mosaic, and are especially prominent in Paraguay, at upper image right.
