The contrast provided by the tan and orange desert land makes green vegetation and grey cities more visible than normal in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image of the Middle East. In the lower right corner of the image, the patterned grids of agricultural fields in Saudi Arabia are clearly visible. Even isolated farms can be seen along the northern borders of the country. Agriculture also lines the mighty Euphrates River, which runs diagonally across the image from the top center to the right center. Along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, grey patches show the locations of cities. The cities are particularly easy to see against the orange of the desert.
Snow still covered the mountains in Lebanon, in the east, and Turkey, in the north on March 22, 2004, when the MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. Turkey forms the top border of the image. Going down along the Mediterranean coast are Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine, and Egypt. Saudi Arabia forms the lower right corner of the image, and above it are Jordon (left) and Iraq (right).
