Southeastern United States

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite detected several smoky fires burning in the southeast United States on April 15, 2004. The fires, marked in red, are probably land-use fires. The Mississippi River cuts a broad tan swath down the left side of the image. The states shown in this image include, from the left, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
