C-19 icebergs off Adelie Coast, Antarctica

Icebergs drifted along the Adelie Coast of Antactica when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured one of its first views of the season after winter’s dark lifted. The largest of the icebergs is the C-19 iceberg, which calved off of the Ross Ice Shelf in May 2002. Over the following two years, the iceberg drifted out of Ross Sea and started to move around Antarctica to the east. On November 9, 2004, when this image was acquired, it was along the Adelie Coast, the part of Antarctica closest to Australia.
