Dense smoke hangs over Portugal and Spain in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, captured by NASA’s Terra satellite on August 5, 2005. The smoke is coming from dozens of forest fires burning in Portugal where drought has left the landscape tinder-dry. The fires have been marked in red.
