Soviet Union in Afghanistan

In December 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. This Landsat 3 image shows the capital city of Kabul nestled between the rugged Asmai and Sherdawaza mountain ranges in eastern Afghanistan. In this image, pockets of vegetation appear red, dry desert landscapes appear tan, and dark shadows hug the mountains that make Kabul a geographic fortress.
