Snow in Central Russia

Snow blanketed central Russia's Sayan Mountains, as shown in this image acquired November 6, 2014, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.

To the east of the mountains lies the southern tip of Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world. When this image was acquired, the lake was still ice-free. Ice typically begins to form by December and fully covers the lake by mid-January.
