On May 24, 2002, MODIS captured this clear view of the Andes Mountains in the South American countries of Peru (top left), Chile (bottom left) and Bolivia (right). Lake Titicaca, which straddles the border of Peru and Bolivia, appears as deep and dark as the Pacific Ocean. To the southeast is Lake Poopo, which receives a small amount of drainage water from Lake Titicaca via the Desaguadero River. To the southwest, the bright white, salty soils of the Salar de Uyuni stand out dramatically.
