Uvs Nuur Basin in Mongolia
The Uvs Nuur Basin sits on the northern edge of the Central Asian steppes, bounded on all sides by mountains. Though largely arid, the basin is dotted with water. A large salt lake, the Uvs Nuur Lake, sits at the center of the basin, and several smaller lakes are scattered across the 600 kilometers east to west and 120 kilometers north to south that make up the basin.

Jebel at Tair
On the evening of September 30, 2007, Jebel at Tair erupted, sending lava down its flanks and releasing a cloud of volcanic ash. A glowing hot spot and a faint volcanic plume suggest that, although the volcano had quieted since September 30, its activity had not completely stopped.

Haze off the U.S. East Coast
Thick haze extended off the U.S. East Coast on October 8, 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the translucent haze obscures the view of the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast. East of the Carolinas, the haze narrows into a thin band that continues eastward.
