Composite Map of Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR) - Coastal Carolinas, March 5 - March 8, 2000

The MODIS BRDF/Albedo product includes several outputs of broad interest to the scientific community. One of these is nadir BRDF-adjusted reflectance (NBAR), which provides the surface reflectance from a viewpoint that is directly overhead. The MODIS instrument images across a wide swath, and thus often obtains views of the surface at strong angles. Because reflectance can vary with view angle, removal of these angular effects, which are described by the surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), is necessary.

This image shows the nadir (overhead) reflectance for coastal regions of North and South Carolina. The nadir view is constructed from four successive MODIS images in early March (March 5-8, 2000). The image is a false color composite of near-infrared, red, and green bands displayed as red, green and blue colors, respectively. In this color presentation, vegetation appears in red tones. The coastline and state boundaries have been added to the image to provide geographic context.
