SeaWiFS: Black Hole in the Ocean

A large area of ocean near the edge of the Patagonian Shelf was almost completely dark yesterday as can be seen in this SeaWiFS image. The responsible phytoplankton community must differ substantially -- either in species composition, total biomass, vertical distribution, or some combination of the three -- from those in the surrounding more brightly-colored waters.
