Fires in Central America

Many fires (red dots) can be seen burning in the Yucatan and Central America in this true-color MODIS image. Also visible along the coastlines are brilliant blue-green waters that may signal the presence of phytoplankton (microscopic marine organisms that use chlorophyll for photosynthesis and which live in nutrient-rich waters). Some brownish-blue sediment is also visible in the waters.
