In late July, the snow and ice around the southern margins of Greenland are retreating in the face of the season’s summer temperatures. In the deeply carved fjords and inlets, runoff filled with fine glacial sediment turns the waters bright blue. At image right, a river of finely crushed ice makes white swirls in coastal waters. Farther out to sea, blue-green swirls reveal the location of phytoplankton.
