Fires and burn scars in Northern and Central Australia

These true- and false-color images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) from October 2002, show numerous fires burning across Western Australia (left) and Northern Territory (right). The boundary between the two falls along a north-south line running just right of the center of the image. In the false-color image, vegetation appears in shades of green, naturally bare soil appears pinkish, and burn scars appear dark brown.
