Fires in New South Wales, Australia

Drought and unfavorable weather are keeping the fires burning in New South Wales and southeast Queensland, Australia. This true-color image shows Sydney centered along the bottom edge. North of town, large fires (red dots) continue to burn and threaten suburban homes. Scattered fires stretch northward through the Great Dividing Range Mountains in New South Wales and into Queensland near the top of the image. In the high-resolution scene, a large fire can be seen burning on Moreton Island, just offshore of the city of Brisbane. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on November 6, 2002.
