Cape Verde Islands

The Cape Verde Islands are a small cluster of volcanic islands off the coast of Senegal in western Africa. These images show the effect the islands have on wind patterns over the Atlantic Ocean. These images were acquired in late December 2002 and early 2003 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra and Aqua satellites. Late in the series a haze approaches from the southeast, likely a mixture of Saharan dust and smoke from biomass burning (red dots) in West Africa.
