Crushed ice swirls in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (center) off the coast of New Brunswick (west) and Nova Scotia (south), Canada, while ribbons of clouds stream northeastward and out of the image at upper right. Dense ice chokes the numerous inlets and river mouths in this winter scene from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on January 29, 2003. In the Bay of Fundy, bottom left, brown sediment has been churned up, likely by the tides, which are the largest on Earth, due to the funnel shape of the Bay and its great depth.
