Snow across Northeast United States

The winter of 2002-03 has brought unusually high levels of snow and rain to the east coast of the United States. Much of the region was still covered by snow (white pixels), stretching from Canada down into southwestern Virginia. This melting snow and rain in the mid-Atlantic States sent increased volumes of sediment-laden water into coastal estuaries, such as the Chesapeake Bay (center), and from there into the Atlantic Ocean. This sediment makes the water appear a dark, murky brown that gradually lightens as it dissipates farther off the Atlantic coast. This true-color Terra MODIS image was acquired March 3, 2003.
