Fires in West Africa

A high concentration of fires (red dots) was detected in southern Guinea (center) in West Africa on March 10, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Other countries shown are (clockwise from top left) Senegal (surrounding Gambia), Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau. Over the Atlantic Ocean (left), dust from the Sahara Desert creates a tan haze.
