Newfoundland

Light and dark contrast with each other in this true-color Terra MODIS image of Newfoundland Island and the eastern Canadian coast. Clouds, snow, and sea ice make up the light portions of the image, while land and water provide the dark. Low-level water clouds cover most of the North Atlantic, though thin, high-level cirrus clouds skim across Canada´s Newfoundland province, Newfoundland Island, and Quebec province. Sea ice floats off the Canadian mainland coast in the North Atlantic and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, as well as off the coast of Newfoundland Island in the Cabot Strait. Snow covers all of the visible land, making it appear in shades of gray. This image was acquired on March 20, 2003.
