Dust storm in Taklimakan Desert, Western China

At the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, a dust storm was brewing over the Taklimakan Desert (center) in April 2003. Ringed by the Kunlun Mountains to the south and the Tien Shan Mountains to the north, the dust storm was confined to the desert basin in this series of true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images.
