Although the Aspen fire is 65 percent contained, smoke still rises to the north of Tucson, Arizona. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) shows the fire at 11:30 a.m.(local time) on June 29, 2003. Red areas were actively burning. More than 39,000 acres have burned, mostly in Coronado National Forest. A Burned Area Emergency Response Team is currently examining recently burned areas. They will map the extent and severity of the fire to help mitigate potential future hazards such as landslides.
