Fawn Peak Complex Fire, Washington

Started by lightning on June 29, the Fawn Peak Complex Fire had grown to more than 60,000 acres as of July 27, 2003. The fire was about 35 percent contained and was steadily approaching the U.S.-Canada border, and negotiations are underway to bring in Canadian firefighters to help battle the spread of the fire. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image of the fire (marked in red in center) was captured by the Aqua satellite on July 27.
