Southwestern United States

This cloud-free image affords an impressive view of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Snow covers the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the north. Running from the top center towards the lower left side of the image, the pink vein of rocks following the course of the Colorado River is an expanse of canyon lands. Six National Parks and National Monuments surround this section of the Colorado River including Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, and the Grand Canyon National Park.

This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image shows nine US states and Northern Mexico, bottom. Starting in the top left corner and going clockwise, the US states are Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. This true-color image was acquired on November 18, 2003 by the Aqua satellite. The red dots show where fires are burning.
