Fires in northern Baja California

Thick plumes of smoke billowed from fires burning in the coastal mountains of northern Mexico on November 19, 2005. The fires, marked with red squares, were fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, which also blew the smoke west over the Pacific Ocean. The grid of green in the upper right corner of the image is irrigated cropland in the Imperial Valley. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on November 19, 2005.
