Fires in Central Canada

Smoke continued to pour from fires in central and western Canada in the first week of July. This image from the MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite on July 5, 2006, shows thick gray smoke hanging over Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, as well as a brownish-tinged plume of smoke reaching across the image from Alberta and the Northwest Territories to the Hudson Bay. Clouds are bright white, and places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are marked in red.
