MOPITT’s Science Objectives

Methane is a greenhouse gas that is about 20 times more efficient that carbon dioxide at retaining the Earth's heat. The sources of methane include swamps, certain agricultural fields (such as rice), urban pollution, and fires. This artist's concept animation shows MOPITT measuring methane concentrations in the troposphere. MOPITT is managed by the Canadian Space Agency.
