Fires and smoke across in Eastern Russia

Smoke streams westward from summer fires on Russia’s southeastern coast in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image taken by the Aqua satellite on July 24, 2003. The island of Sakhalin appears on the right and the northern tip of Japan is just below it. Active fire detections are represented by red dots.
