The Mid-Atlantic States

Seen as grey patches in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, cities string along the northeast coast of the United States. The northernmost coastal city is Boston. Below that, to the left of the cloud, is New York followed by Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia. The southernmost cities on the coast are Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia. In this image, taken on August 24, 2003, the Appalachian Mountains look like dark green ripples. Cleveland is nestled against the southern shores of Lake Erie (left), while Toronto, Canada, is visible on the northwest side of Lake Ontario (right). Active fire detections have been marked with red dots.
