Fires in New Guinea and Cape York Peninsula, Australia

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on the Aqua satellite saw dozens of active fires, marked with red dots, burning throughout New Guinea and the Cape York Peninsula in Australia. The most intense fires are sending plumes of smoke eastward over the Gulf of Carpentaria (south) and the Arafura Sea (north). This image was acquired on September 18, 2003.
