Morocco

The Atlas Mountains form a barrier between Morocco’s green coastal zone and the northwestern edge of the vast Sahara Desert. This strikingly clear image of northern Morocco was acquired on January 21, 2004, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. Along the shore, sediment colors the waters of the Atlantic Ocean tan and green. The right half of the image shows Algeria, also green along the coast north of the Atlas Mountains. The brown mountain range that diverges from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and curves across the center of the image is the Atlas Saharien.
