Smoke Transport over Southern Africa

Aerosols from various sources in Southern Africa were visible to the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) on July 9, 2003. Comprised mostly of smoke particles from the widespread biomass burning, the light gray aerosols offer good contrast against the dark background of the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Near the top of the image, smoke plumes in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo can be seen contributing to the haze. Farther south, dust plumes can be seen blowing out of northern Namibia.
