The delicate spirals of subtropical storm Nicole are approaching Nova Scotia, Canada, in this image, acquired by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor on the OrbView-2 satellite on October 12, 2004. The storm combined with a low-pressure system already over the region to bring winds that gusted up to 90 kilometers per hour (56 mph) to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada, and Maine and Massachusetts in the United States. Nicole is the 14th named storm of the 2004 Atlantic Hurricane season.
The image also shows the changing season creeping south along the Atlantic seaboard. Vibrant orange leaves color the landscape in the north, blending to green in the south.
