On May 6, 2007, a thin tendril of dust stretched northward across the Mediterranean Sea, originating in Libya and heading for Italy and the Balkans. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite took this picture the same day.
In this image, the dust appears as a translucent streak of tan over the navy blue ocean water. The dust is thickest off the tip of Libya’s coast, thinning as it blows northward. Opaque white clouds mingle with the dust, particularly over land.
You can download a 250-meter-resolution Mediterranean Sea KMZ file for use with Google Earth.
