This photograph shows deforestation and agricultural development along Rio Parapetí in Bolivia between 1995 and 2008.
Astronaut photographs STS73-E-5338 (top image) was acquired November 2, 1995, using the Kodak DCS460 electronic still camera (lens unknown). Photographs ISS018-E-8064 and ISS018-E-8065, merged together for the bottom image, were taken on November 9, 2008, using a Nikon D2Xs digital camera fitted with a 180 mm lens. These images are provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The bottom images were taken by the Expedition 18 crew. The image in this article has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet.
