Bingham Canyon, southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah is home to the Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The copper mine is estimated at over three-quarters of a mile deep and two and a half miles wide. The copper mine has been in production since 1906 and was recognized and designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
This image shows a Landsat view of the Bingham Copper Mine. The mine is shown in yellow. Snow on the surrounding Oquirrh mountains is white, while the vegetation is a dark green.
This Landsat TM natural color image was acquired using bands 3, 2 and 1 on May 13, 2009. The Bingham Copper Mine falls on Landsat WRS-2 Path 38 Row 32.
