Baghdad, Iraq

Current events make war-torn Baghdad a staple of today's news. The city is the capital of Iraq and the most populous city in the country. Some scholars contend that Baghdad was the largest city in the world during the 9th century, when it was a hotspot of culture and learning.

Geographically, Baghdad straddles the Tigris River (the river can be seen meandering from the top center to bottom right of the Landsat 7 image above). The runways of the Baghdad International Airport can be seen to the southwest of the city center.

This Landsat 7 image was acquired on Apr. 25, 2000. It is a color composite of ETM+ bands 3, 2, and 1.
