Lop Nur, China

Lop Nur, also referred to as “The Wandering Lake,” due to its frequent change in size and shape, is located in the eastern Xinjiang region. The saline lake dried up in the 1970s leaving behind a salt-encrusted lakebed. In this image the mineral salts are displayed in blue-green, grey, and tan. Sand dunes in the southwest corner are reddish brown and folded rocks appear brick red and dark brown.

This Landsat 7 image was acquired on April 5, 2000. It is a false color image using ETM+ bands 7, 4, 2, and the panchromatic band. Lop Nur falls on Landsat WRS-2 Path 140 Row 32.
