Mount Kilimanjaro Closeup

Most scientists agree that the glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro will be gone by the year 2020, but there is less agreement as to why they are now receding.


Astronaut photograph ISS009-E-13366 was taken June 28, 2004, with a Kodak DCS760 digital camera equipped with an 800-mm lens. Oblique astronaut photograph ISS006-E-45499 was taken April 9, 2003, with a Kodak DCS760 digital camera equipped with an 800-mm lens. These images are provided by the Earth Observations Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet.
