The MODIS instrument "sees" the Earth at in 36 different wavelengths of the spectrum, ranging from visible to thermal infrared light. With its wide spectral resolution and viewing swaths, MODIS makes measurements useful in a wide variety of Earth system science disciplines. This artist's concept animation shows MODIS measuring primary productivity of green foliage on land and phytoplankton in the ocean, followed by measurements of land and sea surface temperature. These are but two of the myriad data products MODIS will collect daily on a global scale.
