The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have teamed up to compile the first seamless National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery for the conterminous United States. At 30-meter resolution, the NLCD is the most detailed land cover information ever compiled at a national level. These data contain 21 categories of land cover information across the lower 48 states and are used in a variety of national and regional applications, including watershed management, environmental inventories, transportation modeling and land management. This false color classification map of Delaware was created from data downloaded from the USGS site. Medium blue represents open water, red wetlands, light blue urban areas, oranges grass and croplands, greens forest and shrubland. The heavy industrialization of the north end of the state is plainly visible, as well as the distribution of wetlands.
