Wildfires in Western Australia

On October 26, 2001, MODIS captured this true-color surface reflectance image of the northwest coast of Australia. Visible in this image are phytoplankton blooms in the Indian Ocean (upper-left) and the Timor Sea (top), which separates Australia from Indonesia. Several fires have been detected and are superimposed on the image as red dots. MODIS has thermal detectors uniquely designed to detect thermal radiation as hot as 500K without saturating.
