Southeast Brazil

A number of fires are burning in Southeast Brazil in this true-color MODIS image acquired April 2, 2002. The fires, depicted as red dots on the image, are burning hot enough for the MODIS sensor to detect them from a 705 km altitude orbit. The city of Rio de Janeiro is visible on the coast in the lower right area of the image.
