Fires in Northeast China and Russia

A number of fires (red dots) can be seen burning in this true-color MODIS image acquired April 3, 2002. The fires, located in Northeast China and eastern Russia, burn hot enough that they can be detected by the MODIS instrument at an altitude of 705 km above the Earth. Also prominent in this image are the Sea of Japan and Lake Khanka.
