The Appalachian Mountains run northeast to southwest from Maine all the way to Georgia. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from April 24, 2002, shows that spring has yet to arrive in the higher elevations, and brown ridges contrast sharply with green vegetation in the lower elevations. A few scattered fires (red dots) were detected by MODIS in North Carolina (bottom), West Virginia (left) and Deleware (right).
